Planning your Costa Rica trip but confused about when to go? The weather here changes dramatically between regions and seasons, and picking the wrong time can mean missed wildlife sightings, closed roads, or hurricane-level rain when you wanted sunshine.

After years of planning thousands of Costa Rica vacations from our base in Esterillos Este, I’ll break down exactly when to visit based on what you want to experience and your budget.

Costa Rica’s Two Main Seasons

Best Months by Activity

Beach Activities (December – April)

If you’re coming for Manuel Antonio beaches, Tamarindo surfing, or any Pacific coast time, the dry season is your friend. Zero rain, consistent 85°F temperatures, and calm seas make this perfect for families.

The downside? Hotel rates double during Christmas and Easter weeks. Book early or expect sticker shock.

Wildlife Watching (May – November)

Here’s what most travel guides won’t tell you: the green season is actually better for wildlife. Animals are more active, birds are nesting, and the afternoon rains create perfect conditions for spotting sloths, monkeys, and tropical birds.

Adventure Activities Year-Round

Zip-lining, volcano hikes, and most adventure tours run year-round. The key is choosing the right region for the season you’re visiting.

Regional Weather Differences

Pacific Coast

Where we’re based near Jaco and Manuel Antonio, the dry season is bone dry. January through March can go weeks without a single drop of rain. Perfect for beach lovers, tough for anyone wanting that lush tropical jungle experience.

Caribbean Coast

Puerto Viejo and the Caribbean side march to their own weather drum. Expect more rain year-round, but also the most consistent temperatures and fewer extreme dry periods.

Central Valley & Mountains

San José, Arenal, and Monteverde stay cooler year-round. Even in dry season, you’ll get afternoon clouds and cooler nights. Pack layers.

When NOT to Come (My Honest Take)

October is brutal. I tell clients this all the time — if you absolutely need sunshine and hate rain, skip October. It’s the wettest month, some mountain roads become impassable, and even we locals get tired of the daily downpours.

Also, if you’re planning a beach-focused trip and can only travel in September-October, honestly consider waiting until December or choosing a different destination. You’ll spend more time indoors than you want.

Specific Month Recommendations

January – February

The sweet spot. Dry, sunny, and past the Christmas crowds. Temperatures hit 85-90°F daily with zero rain. This is when I bring my own family to the beach.

March – April

Still dry but getting hot and dusty. Great for beach activities but landscapes look tired. Easter week gets crazy busy.

May – June

My personal favorite time. Light afternoon rains keep everything green, crowds are gone, and prices drop. Perfect for Monteverde Cloud Forest visits.

July – August

Mini dry season on the Pacific coast. Less rain than other green season months but still lush. Good compromise between weather and pricing.

September – November

Peak green season. Heavy afternoon rains but incredible wildlife activity. November is the transition month — still green but rain tapering off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Costa Rica safe to visit during hurricane season?

Costa Rica rarely gets direct hurricane hits. We’re south of the main hurricane belt, though we can get heavy rains from storms passing by. September-October sees the most weather-related travel disruptions.

Can you still do activities during green season rain?

Absolutely. Most rain comes in predictable afternoon storms. We schedule activities for mornings, you get lunch, then enjoy the afternoon rain from your hotel. It’s actually refreshing.

Which season is better for seeing animals?

Green season, hands down. More active wildlife, better bird watching, and animals congregate around water sources. Dry season wildlife viewing can be disappointing.

Do I need different clothes for different seasons?

Green season: Pack a light rain jacket and quick-dry clothes. Dry season: Focus on sun protection and lightweight fabrics. Both seasons: Bring layers for mountain areas.

When should I book my trip?

Dry season trips: Book 6-8 months ahead, especially for Christmas and Easter. Green season: 2-3 months is usually fine, but early booking gets better rates.
