Cultural Experience Costa Rica

Costa Rica is more than breathtaking landscapes — it’s a vibrant culture shaped by history, community, and the famous Pura Vida lifestyle. From colorful festivals and traditional cuisine to local artisans and indigenous heritage, every experience connects you to the true spirit of the country.

Whether you’re exploring lively towns or visiting remote villages, Costa Rica offers authentic cultural encounters that go far beyond sightseeing.

🌿 The Pura Vida Lifestyle

At the core of Costa Rican culture is “Pura Vida”, a way of life that reflects positivity, simplicity, and gratitude. Locals (known as Ticos) embrace a relaxed, friendly approach to life, valuing family, community, and nature.

Visitors quickly feel this energy — whether chatting with locals, enjoying a slow meal, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

Traditional Costa Rican Cuisine

Food is one of the most authentic ways to experience Costa Rican culture. Influenced by Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean traditions, the cuisine is simple, fresh, and full of flavor.

Must-try dishes:

Gallo Pinto – the iconic rice and beans breakfast
Casado – a hearty local plate with rice, beans, meat, and plantains
Ceviche – fresh seafood marinated in lime juice
Fresh tropical fruits from local farms and markets

For a truly local experience, visit small family-run eateries known as “sodas.”

Festivals & Local Traditions

Costa Rica comes alive through its festivals — a blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Caribbean influences.

Cultural highlights include:

Limón Carnival – vibrant Caribbean celebration with music, dance & parades
Oxcart (Boyero) Festivals – showcasing beautifully painted traditional carts
Topes & Rodeos – horse parades and cowboy traditions
Independence Day (Sept 15) – nationwide celebrations with parades and music

These events reflect the country’s deep connection to community, agriculture, and heritage.

FAQS

What activities should I avoid in Costa Rica?

From the most ardent of thrill seekers to those solely looking for the most laid-back and relaxing vacation, Costa Rica has something for everyone. If there’s something you don’t want to do, there’s always an alternative activity suited to your level of adventure, strength, and age. Some adventure activities accommodate travelers with various disabilities, or we can find equally fun alternatives for your group if necessary.

Costa Rica’s “signature activity” is the zip line canopy tour. It’s almost a crime to come to Costa Rica and not partake in one of these. However, a hanging bridge tour to experience the rainforest canopy more relaxed is a great alternative to zip lining.

It depends on what you’re looking for and what you want to do. Most of our vacation packages are around a week-long, and this gives travelers an excellent general introduction to Costa Rica and its adventure activities. We would not recommend coming for less than seven days, although it’s certainly feasible.
